A string working directly at the controller does not prove it will work at the end of a long extension. Test the cable you intend to install, with the exact controller and pixels it will serve.
There is no universal distance
Usable extension length depends on the controller, pixel protocol, cable construction, connections, electrical noise, and the power delivered to the pixels. Pixel count and brightness can also affect voltage drop.
A distance published for one controller and one pixel type is not a guarantee for another combination. Check your equipment's documentation and use the installed arrangement as the test case.
Build the real cable path first
- Confirm connector wiring and voltage with power disconnected.
- Start with a short known-good cable to establish that the output and prop work.
- Replace it with the planned extension, including any adapters and intermediate connections.
- Run basic colors and a chase at low intensity.
- After checking the circuit ratings, test the highest intended operating level and demanding patterns.
- Label the cable and record the controller, prop, and settings used.
If the longer run fails
Return to the short cable and repeat the same test. If that restores normal operation, inspect the longer cable and its connections, then assess voltage drop and data-signal requirements. Shortening the cable changes both, so the result does not identify the cause by itself.
A suitable differential receiver system or a controller located closer to the prop may be a better plan for a long run. Use compatible hardware and follow its wiring and distance requirements.
Retest outside
Once installed, repeat the test with the final routing and power setup. Conditions around the cable can differ from the workbench, and a connector may have been disturbed during installation.
