You do not need to build the whole dream display in your first season. Choose a manageable show, make one complete setup work, and grow from there. We want you to understand the connections well enough to set it up, troubleshoot it, and enjoy running it.

Pick the show you can realistically install
A roof section, several arches, or a few coro features can be a useful first display. A MegaTree can also be your planned project when you have the space, supports, equipment, assembly help, and time it requires.
Measure the area, mark the viewing position, and walk the cable routes. Give yourself separate dates for bench testing, assembly, installation, and a full rehearsal. Avoid building the schedule around a universal “takes one afternoon” estimate; your access and design matter.
Choose how you will sequence and play the show
xLights and Light-O-Rama offer ways to build synchronized lighting sequences. Compare current system requirements, supported hardware, and the license features you need. Start with the official xLights quick start or Light-O-Rama license comparison.
Also decide what will run the show each evening. That may be playback tools supported by your software or a compatible standalone player such as Falcon Player. Confirm the file format and controller connections before choosing the player. Sequencing, playback, and pixel control are separate jobs even when a device combines some of them.

As one starting combination to evaluate, a compatible coro prop could use standard EVO pixels and a suitable MD1500 Baldrick8 xConnect build. Match the exact connector variant, node count, load, and physical fit. The product names alone do not finish the design.
Match power and data before connecting anything
Use the voltage specified for your actual lights. Choosing 12V does not eliminate voltage drop or establish a universal number of pixels you can run without additional power feeds.
Confirm what the controller receives from your computer or player and what it sends to the pixels. A plug adapter does not automatically translate voltage or protocol. Check pinouts and data direction, and ask us when a connection is uncertain.
Make one prop work on the bench
Start with a small verified combination of controller, power equipment, and pixels on an accessible surface. Turn power off before moving connections. Check red, green, blue, movement, and off with the appropriate tools.
For xLights, use our first-prop guide. Keep the settings and label the cable when it works. That becomes your reference when you connect the next prop.
Create a short sequence before a full playlist
Make the software match the physical props, including counts and wiring order. Use names you can recognize outside. Build one short sequence so you can check the complete path without managing a whole evening's content.
You can create effects or adapt compatible purchased sequences. Check the seller's requirements and map the content to your own layout. Our whole-show xLights guide covers models, groups, timing, and imported effects.
Install, then test the installed version
Follow each prop's mounting instructions. Keep connections accessible, protect cable routes, and avoid trip paths. Test again with the final extensions and power layout; those can differ from the bench setup.
Run the actual nightly player, audio, and complete playlist. Check transitions, start time, and shutdown. FPP users can follow our handoff checklist and the official scheduler guide.
Leave yourself a clear starting point for next season
Save editable sequences, media, playback files, configuration, and a cable map. Photograph connections and label storage by prop. Record what needed attention while you remember it.
