Cable routing is part of the display plan. Decide how the cables will reach each prop before you finish placing and mounting everything. That gives you a chance to avoid awkward crossings, inaccessible connections and cables stretched tightly between equipment.
Plan around the way the property is used
Walk the route from each controller to its props. Look for doors, gates, footpaths, vehicle areas, moving equipment and sprinkler locations. A route that looks convenient on a drawing may interfere with normal activity once the display is installed.
- Keep cables out of walking and driving routes wherever practical.
- Where a crossing is unavoidable, use cable protection rated for that location and the expected traffic.
- Avoid pinching cables in doors or routing them across sharp edges.
- Support cable runs so connectors and pixel wires do not carry the cable's weight.
- Keep connection points identifiable and accessible for inspection.
- Choose cable types, lengths and weather protection appropriate to the actual equipment and installation.
Check the finished route
Leave useful slack where equipment needs service access, but secure it so it does not create a snag or trip hazard. Keep bend limits and strain-relief requirements from the equipment instructions in mind. A tightly bundled or neatly hidden cable is not automatically installed correctly.
Power the affected equipment off before moving, disconnecting or adjusting its wiring. After routing, confirm the labels and connection assignments, then test the actual installed cable path. A successful short bench test does not prove that a different extension arrangement will behave the same way.
Inspect the routes again during the season, especially after weather or yard work. A cable that was protected on setup day can become exposed if a cover moves or the surrounding installation changes.
Mattos tip: Plan the route first, protect the cable appropriately and test the same connection path you will use during the show.
