Controller test mode lights your pixels, but your xLights sequence does not? A successful hardware test does not prove the controller is receiving the right live data. Use these checks in order.
1. Find which test works
Compare controller built-in test mode, xLights live Test output, and a rendered xLights sequence. Record which works before changing settings.
2. Confirm live controller communication
Check the controller IP address, network connection, protocol, and xLights controller entry. Turn off built-in test mode before testing live data where required by the controller.
3. Verify xLights outputs
Ensure the correct controller is enabled, output to lights is active, and xLights and the controller use matching DDP, E1.31, or other supported output settings. Preview playback alone does not send data to your lights.
4. Match the physical port to the model
Check the model's assigned controller, port, pixel count, start position, and any null pixels or zigzag settings. After changes, update controller configuration as required.
5. Isolate one prop
Run a simple live color test on one known-working prop. Then put a visible effect on that exact model in a short sequence, render and save, and play with output enabled. If live Test works but the sequence fails, inspect model assignments and rendering first.
6. Separate FPP problems from xLights problems
If the xLights sequence runs correctly but FPP playback fails, verify the uploaded FSEQ, audio, channel outputs, controller destinations, playlist, and schedule. See our xLights-to-FPP guide.
Quick diagnosis
- Controller test works, xLights Test fails: check networking, output settings, and protocol.
- xLights Test works, sequence fails: check model assignment, effect placement, rendering, and playback.
- xLights works, FPP fails: check FSEQ upload, outputs, and playlist.
- Only part lights: check pixel counts and port mapping before replacing hardware.
Mattos tip: Screenshot your settings and change only one variable at a time. For Baldrick controllers, use our Baldrick xLights guide. For general electrical symptoms, use RGB troubleshooting.
