When a display worked yesterday and behaves differently today, one of the most useful questions is: what changed? A simple change log gives you an answer. It does not need special software. A shared document or notebook works if you can find it and keep it current.
Write down the changes that affect the show
Record the date, the section involved, what you changed and what happened during the test afterward. Include physical changes as well as software settings. A longer extension or a moved prop can matter just as much as a different controller assignment.
- Note added, removed or relocated props.
- Record changes to pixel counts, model direction, groups and controller assignments.
- Document replacement cables, adapters and altered cable routes.
- Keep a record of configuration or firmware changes when you make them.
- Write down the test result and any issue that remains unresolved.
Make each entry specific enough to use
An entry such as 'fixed the window' will not help much later. 'Moved left window to the recorded spare output, updated its assignment and confirmed the test pattern' tells you what to inspect if the issue returns. Keep the matching labels and layout notes current too.
Before a significant change, save a known working copy of the relevant show files or configuration using the software's supported backup method. Your change log explains the difference between those versions; it does not replace the backup itself.
At the start of a new season, review last year's notes before reusing the old plan. List what is different this year, then check the affected parts of the display deliberately. A documented change is much easier to test than a surprise discovered during the first song.
Mattos tip: Write down what changed and whether it worked. Future troubleshooting becomes much more focused when you have that record.
