The music sounds great through your laptop headphones. That is a useful start. Your opening-night test needs to include the actual show player, audio connection and speakers or receiver your audience will use.

Follow the sound from player to listener

Start with the exact music file used to build the sequence. Different edits, introductions or versions of the same song can put the lights and music out of step. Confirm that the show computer or player has the matching file, not just the sequence.

  1. Play a song through the intended show software or player and confirm the selected audio output reaches your sound system.
  2. Listen for missing audio, distortion, hum and sudden volume jumps between songs or announcements.
  3. Watch a few clear musical cues while listening from the normal audience position. Check that the timing feels consistent.
  4. Repeat after a normal player restart so you know the expected audio output and volume settings return.

Check the small details

On a show PC, make sure system notification sounds are not joining the performance. Light-O-Rama's show-PC guidance specifically addresses audio devices and muting other sound sources. Its player also has its own volume and mute controls, so check those as well as the computer and amplifier.

If you use xLights to upload a musical sequence through FPP Connect, check that the intended media file was included. The media upload option matters; seeing the sequence file on the player is not enough.

Finally, play the transition between two songs and any spoken message. Set a comfortable listening level for the actual location, record the working settings and include audio in the full rehearsal.
