Adding one prop can lead to changes in groups, channel assignments and several sequences. Before moving those pieces around, save a dated copy of the show that already works. Give yourself a reliable starting point to return to.
Back up the pieces you would need to rebuild
Saving a sequence and backing up a show are different jobs. Your recovery copy should include the editable sequence files, required media, layout or preview information, and the relevant controller and network configuration. Include equipment configuration exports where your equipment supports them.
- Save your current work before making the backup.
- Create a dated copy and name it clearly, such as 'Halloween-working-before-new-props'.
- Check that referenced audio, images and other assets are included or backed up separately. An automatic application backup may cover only selected file types.
- Keep an additional copy on a separate device or storage service. A backup beside the original on the same drive does not protect against that drive failing.
Check the backup before you need it
Browse the copy and confirm that the expected files are present. For a stronger check, open a copied sequence and its matching layout in a separate test location, with output to physical lights disabled. Confirm that required media can be found without overwriting the working show.
xLights provides backup settings and an alternate backup location; review their scope in your installed version. Light-O-Rama also provides options for timestamped sequence copies. These features are helpful, but still check what they include.
Once the changed layout is tested and working, make a second dated backup. Keep the earlier working version until you are satisfied that the new setup behaves correctly across the show.
Mattos tip: Make the recovery copy while everything works, then confirm that it contains what you would need to recover.
