A repair kit is most useful when its contents match your display and you already know they work. Put it together before opening night. The goal is to make a controlled diagnosis and a suitable replacement easier, especially when it is dark and you would rather be watching the show.
Choose spares for the equipment you actually use
Start with the small parts that could stop a section of your display. Test the replacements before labeling them as good spares. Keep different connector systems and pixel types clearly identified instead of mixing them in one unmarked bag.
- Include suitable, tested spare cables and adapters for your connection types.
- Keep compatible replacement pixels or strands identified by voltage, protocol and connector.
- Store manufacturer-specified replacement fuses where applicable, clearly labeled with their ratings.
- Add spare labels, suitable mounting supplies and the tools your normal repairs require.
- Keep a flashlight and a readable copy of the wiring and controller-assignment notes with the kit.
Use the kit to isolate the problem
When something fails, stop and identify the affected section. Power the equipment off before changing connections. Substitute one compatible, known working item at a time and record the result. This keeps the repair understandable and helps you avoid turning a small issue into several unknowns.
Replace a fuse only with the type and rating specified for that equipment, and address the reason it opened. Repeatedly fitting replacements or increasing the rating is not a repair.
Put questionable parts in a separate, clearly marked container. Do not return them to the good-spares bag until you have tested and resolved the issue. After using a spare, replenish the kit while you still remember what was taken.
Mattos tip: A small kit of tested, clearly labeled, compatible spares is more useful than a large box of unknown parts.
