A prop can look perfect on your computer while its real pixels run backward, start in the wrong corner or respond to another prop's effects. Find that out during a simple mapping test, before you spend an evening sequencing.
Give every prop a simple test
Start with one connected prop and its matching model or preview definition. Use a short diagnostic sequence or an appropriate test pattern. Explicitly select the intended output and set a suitable test intensity before enabling the lights; do not assume sequence brightness settings also limit test modes. xLights provides tests for individual models and nodes; Light-O-Rama provides preview, channel and pixel tests. Available controls depend on your software version and setup.
- Select one prop and confirm that only the intended physical prop responds.
- Run a slow chase or another clear moving pattern. Watch where it starts, the direction it travels and where it finishes.
- Compare that movement with the model's intended wiring order. Check turns, branches and transitions between strings.
- Use a known red, green and blue diagnostic sequence to compare the intended colors with the actual output. Investigate a mismatch before adding more effects.
Correct the map, then repeat the test
If something disagrees, check the model file, pixel count, starting location, controller assignment and physical wiring against your equipment documentation. Change one item at a time so you know what fixed it. Save the working configuration and label the cable or port assignment.
A successful mapping test confirms the behavior you checked. It does not prove that the power distribution is adequate or that every other sequence is ready. After mapping is correct, continue with your normal power checks and a full show rehearsal.
Mattos tip: A few minutes with a simple chase can save hours of correcting effects later.
