A few pixels chasing around a prop will not tell you everything about its power setup. Test the demanding parts of your show too, after checking that the installation is rated to handle them.
Check the limits before the test
Confirm the planned load stays within the power supply, controller bank, output, wire, connector, and fuse ratings. If the numbers do not fit, change the power plan before running the test.
Use the actual installed cable lengths and intended brightness. A short bench cable can hide a voltage-drop problem that appears with the longer cable in the yard.
Set the test intensity deliberately
Check the test tool before enabling output. The xLights Test dialog uses an intensity scale from 0 to 255, and its default Highlight Intensity is 255: full output. Select only the outputs you intend to test and set the intensity first.
Do not assume a brightness reduction in a sequence controls a controller's standalone test mode or every software test. Confirm how your equipment applies its limits.
Build up to the planned demand
- Start with one output at low intensity to confirm correct wiring and operation.
- Increase only to the highest operating level allowed by your checked plan.
- Include demanding patterns your show uses. White activates the RGB channels together, so use it only at a level your installation supports.
- Check for flicker, color changes, resets, or protection trips. Stop and investigate any problem.
- Repeat with the intended combination of outputs running together, within the shared supply and bank limits.
Mattos tip: Test the load you designed for. An unrestricted full-white test is not a substitute for a power plan.
