A large display becomes easier to manage when you break it into sections you can install, test and document separately. Roofline, windows, arches and trees are useful starting points. The exact division matters less than having a clear boundary around the part you are working on.

Give each section a clear finish line

Write down the props, controller connections and cable routes for one section. Finish that section's basic checks before moving to the next. This gives you a known working reference if a later addition changes the behavior of the show.

  1. Confirm the section's parts and connections against your plan.
  2. Test the props with equipment and settings that match their requirements.
  3. Check pixel count, colors, start point and direction where applicable.
  4. Label the cables and record the controller assignments.
  5. Run a short sequence on the installed section and note anything that needs attention.

Keep changes small enough to understand

If a section stops working, return to its last known working arrangement. Change one thing at a time and record the result. Replacing several cables while changing software settings makes it difficult to tell which change solved the problem.

Sections can share controllers or a power system, so testing them separately is only one part of the job. Once the individual sections work, test the complete display within the ratings and settings of your planned system. Combined operation can reveal issues that were not visible when only one section was running.

This approach also helps with scheduling. A finished, documented section is a clear milestone. You can see what is complete, what still needs parts and what needs another test before opening night.

Mattos tip: Build one understandable section, prove it works, document it, then expand. Finish with a complete-show test.
