Which Aurà Formula Do You Need?

The SurgeFX Aurà™ line includes three water-based formulas and one oil-based formula. Each produces fine, professional haze for lighting enhancement — the difference is hang time and machine type.

Elemental Is the Starting Point

If you only stock one haze fluid, Elemental is the one. It covers the widest range of applications with balanced performance. Once you've used Elemental and identified specific needs — faster clearance for theatrical cues, or longer persistence for concerts — add Whisper or Essence for those specialized jobs. Most operators end up keeping Elemental as their everyday fluid and adding a specialty formula for specific gig types.

Will this work in my haze machine?

Aurà Elemental works in water-based haze machines only. Check your machine's manual or spec sheet — if it calls for water-based haze fluid, Elemental is compatible. This includes machines from SurgeFX and most major haze machine manufacturers. If your machine requires oil-based fluid, use Aurà Pro instead.

Is haze fluid the same as fog fluid?

No. Haze and fog are different effects that use different machines and different fluids. Haze produces a fine, even mist that stays suspended and makes light beams visible. Fog produces thicker, more visible clouds of atmosphere. Do not use haze fluid in a fog machine or fog fluid in a haze machine. For fog fluid, see the Nebula™ fog fluid line.

How long does the haze stay in the air?

Elemental has a balanced, medium hang time. It stays suspended long enough to provide consistent beam definition and atmospheric enhancement, but doesn't linger excessively. The exact timing depends on room size, ceiling height, HVAC airflow, and output level. In most venue environments, you'll maintain a steady haze level by running the machine at a moderate, periodic cycle. If you need haze that clears faster, try Whisper. If you need it to stay longer with less maintenance, try Essence.

Will it trigger smoke detectors?

Any atmospheric effect can potentially trigger smoke detection systems, especially particle-based detectors. At moderate output levels, Elemental's balanced density is less likely to cause issues than a long-lasting formula at high output, but it's never guaranteed. Always coordinate with the venue and test before the event.

Does it leave residue?

No. Aurà Elemental is water-based and leaves zero residue on surfaces, equipment, costumes, or instruments. No oily film, no sticky buildup.

Is it safe to breathe?

Aurà Elemental is non-toxic and unscented. It's safe for indoor use in venues with normal ventilation. As with any atmospheric effect, prolonged heavy exposure in a poorly ventilated space can cause mild irritation in sensitive individuals. Use reasonable ventilation.

How much do I need?

Haze machines are far more fluid-efficient than fog machines. A typical water-based hazer running at moderate output uses roughly 1 gallon per 8–20 hours of operation. For most single-night events (4–6 hours), one gallon is more than enough. Stock a spare gallon for back-to-back weekends.

Can I use this in a fog machine?

No. Haze fluid and fog fluid are different formulations designed for different machines. Using haze fluid in a fog machine won't produce the correct effect and could damage the machine. For fog machines, use the Nebula™ fog fluid line.

Start With Elemental, Specialize Later

Elemental is the best first purchase in the Aurà line. Use it across your jobs and pay attention to where you wish the haze cleared faster or hung longer. Those observations tell you when to add Whisper (for theatrical cues and quick transitions) or Essence (for concerts and sustained atmosphere) to your inventory. Most working operators keep Elemental as their default and pull out a specialty formula when the gig calls for it.

Dial In Your Output Level

The best haze is barely visible on its own — you should see the light beams it reveals, not the haze itself. Start with your machine at a low output and slowly increase until beams become defined without the room looking foggy. Most operators overshoot on their first try. Less is more.

Position Matters

For even coverage, position the hazer where its output can distribute across the performance space before reaching the audience. Upstage, in the wings, or overhead are typical positions. Aim the output across the stage rather than directly at the crowd. For large spaces, a second hazer on the opposite side can help fill dead zones.

Coordinate Smoke Detection

Before any gig using haze, contact the venue about their smoke detection system. Most professional venues, churches, and event spaces have protocols for atmospheric effects — they may disable specific zones, switch to heat-based detectors, or require a fire watch. Do this during planning, not during load-in.

Keep a Spare Gallon

Running out of haze fluid mid-event is a lighting disaster. Haze machines are efficient (~1 gallon per 8–20 hours), but always carry a backup gallon in your road case. This is especially important for back-to-back gigs where you might not have time to check levels between events.

Flush Between Fluid Types

If you switch between Aurà formulas for different gigs (Elemental for a wedding, Whisper for a theater call), run a short flush cycle between switches for consistent results. This isn't critical for occasional switching between water-based formulas, but it keeps output quality consistent. Never mix water-based and oil-based fluids.
